Follow-up: Children die after being trapped in burning house

Children die after mother allegedly locked them in a house that caught fire while she was gone.

A 5-year-old child and a 17-month-old baby were trapped in a burning house in Krugersdorp this morning.

The emergency services were called out on Friday morning to attend to a house fire in Rosenberg Street in Burgershoop.

“A police officer passing the street saw what happened and immediately called the fire department. He went to the back of the house and saw two children asleep inside. With the help of community members they broke some windows and took out the children,” confirmed Krugersdorp Police spokesperson, Constable Tshepiso Mashale.

It is believed their mother had locked them in the house before she left.

The fire is believed to have started in the living room.

The News heard that both children were taken to the Yusuf Dadoo Hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation.

“The children were taken to the hospital where both passed away. A case of child neglect is being investigated and an inquest has been opened.”
