Last Saturday Susan the steam train collided with a truck at the level crossing on the R24 in Magaliesburg.

The train was carrying visitors to the Magalies Train Station to spend the day in the countryside when the accident happened.

Following the incident residents of the area have been calling for a boom-style level crossing.

In a bid to make the area safer and to inform road users of the railroad crossing on the R24 road the Social Crime Prevention coordinator Constable Rebecca Phithi together with the team from Transnet handed out pamphlets with safety tips from the police and Transnet.

Constable Rebecca Mokale, Magaliesburg Police Station spokesperson said they handed out over 500 pamphlets to passing commuters on the day.

“It seems the awareness was a success as commuters were very happy that we provided them with these safety tips. They even asked us questions about things they wanted to know.”

She assured this was not the only awareness campaign and that similar campaigns will be conducted in the area.
