CPF and Mogale sparks after power cable snaps

A cable in Quellerie Park snapped after it was possible struck by lightning.

Sparks flew after a power cable snapped following a heavy lightning and thunderstorm in Quellerie Park this past weekend.

Due to what seemed like a loose connection, the power cable just above the substation on the corner of Reyger and Schoeman Streets had been flickering the past few months after every rainstorm.

Following the quick storm on Friday 13 March, it would seem the connection was hanging on its last thread and finally exploded as the cable snapped.

Sparks flew at the intersection as the line swung in the air, causing motorists to pull over.

A group of children was playing further down the street at the time and decided to ran closer to see what the loud noise was about.

The children described the sparks as fireworks that kept flying about for more than a minute.

It is believed the cable snapped and blew fuses at approximately 6.30pm.

The Community Policing Forum (CPF) Sector 3 members were notified and arrived on the corner shortly after to block off the snapped cable and redirect the traffic.

Mogale City’s electricity department reported to the substation to replace the fuses.

CPF members along with Mogale City officials yet again saved the day and then downed tools around 9.25pm when they switched the power back on.
