[INFOGRAPHIC]: Be prepared: 22 hour water shutdown ahead

Krugersdorp residents can prepare themselves for another water shortage this week.

Krugersdorp residents should prepare for yet another water shortage of up to 22 hours.

Mogale City Local Municipality posted on their website that there will be a water shutdown at the Kenmare pump station this Wednesday 18 March from 5.30pm until 3pm the next day on Thursday 19 March due to maintenance work that needs to be done.

The statement further advised residents to, in the event of a shortage of supply, use water sparingly until maintenance on the system is completed.

The following areas will be affected: Kenmare, Noordheuwel (all extensions), Rant-en-Dal, Rangeview ext 4, Featherbrooke and Ruimsig Country Estate.

The Mogale City Council provides the following useful hints in the case of disrupted water supply:

For a short period:

• If you receive a warning, start immediately to fill containers, wash basins and baths.

• If the supply is disrupted without warning, remember the geyser and water tank under the roof. First disconnect the power supply.

For a lengthy period:

• Use any available clean water for drinking purposes only.

• Use the water of the swimming pools, wells and bore-holes. First purify the water by one of the following methods:

– Boil the water for five minutes. This method is best.

– Use water-purification tablets. These are obtainable from most chemists.

– Add a solution of one per cent of available chlorine (Milton, Javel and so forth) four to six drops per litre of water and leave it for 20 minutes to dissolve.

– Add washing bleach or swimming pool chlorine according to directions on the containers

– Leave until turbidity in the water has settled, pour off the clean water, and purify.

• Pure water in closed containers will keep for a long period in cool, dark places. The smell and appearance of water will be an indication as to whether or not it is still safe for use. Boil the water before use.
