Taxi driver flees accident scene

A women with a baby survives a taxi accident in Krugersdorp North.

Over the weekend, a taxi driver fled an accident scene by foot after colliding with a bakkie which had a mother and baby on board.

Screeching tyres and a loud bang were heard almost two blocks away after the taxi, travelling along Van Riebeeck Street, collided into oncoming traffic. An eyewitness on the scene told the News that he was metres behind the taxi when the accident happened.

Bystanders allege that following the collision, the taxi driver got out and fled.

Mogale City Traffic Department and West Rand emergency services were first to arrive, followed by ER24, Help24 and the Community Policing Forum of Sector 3.

It is believed the taxi driver attempted to make a right turn into Buiten Street when he collided with a Hilux bakkie. The driver of the bakkie was travelling from Van Riebeeck Street towards Commissioner Street.

The taxi driver failed to indicate to turn.

A passenger in the taxi had to be removed with the help of emergency services workers who made use of the jaws of life and was later rushed to hospital for medical evaluation.

Miraculously the passenger who was carrying a baby, was not harmed during the accident.

The driver of the Hilux managed to escape the accident with minor injuries.

CPF members assisted by redirecting traffic since the intersection of Viljoen and Blommenstein Streets were blocked off.
