Sewage continues to leak despite it being reported

A local supermarket owner reported it on numerous occasions, but after more than five weeks sewage is still flowing down the road.

Raw sewage has been flowing down Sivewright Street in Luipaardsvlei for more than five weeks now.

A business owner Nearchos Hadjizacharia of the Hollandia Supermarket says the stench is filling his shop and leaves a bad taste in his mouth.

The sewage leak comes from Francis Street, about 400 metres from his shop, which is located at the corner of Sivewright and Pritchard Streets.

“The water is starting to turn green and more smelly. This definitely is bad for business,” he says.

Hadjizacharia says he phoned the municipality on numerous occasions and on one single day he spent about two and a half hours on the phone just to get hold of someone to report the matter.

“I was told by the Mogale City Local Municipality to phone the Randfontein Local Municipality who then referred me back to Mogale City who then said I should phone the Water and Sanitation Department. I have been sent from pillar to post and still do not have any answers.”

He says it is not his duty to check up on the municipality, but he felt as a citizen who pays his rates and taxes it is the right thing to do.

“I am trying to help to keep our area clean, but it seems that the municipality’s workers are being paid just for sitting around – if I am not reporting this, who will?”

He says the sewage stream definitely is a health hazard since the public buys food at a local restaurant across the road.
