Bikers show some heart

Even though the day's attendance was fairly poor, those who attended help drew much-needed awareness towards the worthy cause.

Bikers from the West Rand were invited to show some heart at an awareness day rally in support of organ donation.

The event, Bikers with Heart was hosted at Dirt Bronco’s (an off-road racing track) and also included the off-road bikers community. The day was held to create awareness among bikers and also boost organ donation sign-ups.

Tascha Meredith, a clinical psychologist from the Netcare Transplant Division in Aukland Park together with other stakeholders such as Medi-Help and the Tshwane University of Technology put the day together.

Brian Lombard and his team from the Organ Donor Foundation were also on hand to help out with spreading the word. Lombard underwent a double lung transplant a few years ago and now is actively involved as a volunteer for the foundation. They received 104 signatures of people signing up as organ donors.

The Midrand crew of the South African National Blood Services (SANBS) also participated in the awareness day and received 30 units of blood throughout the day, mostly from those manning the stalls on display.

Meredith says even though the day’s attendance was fairly poor, she is grateful to all who attended and help draw much-needed attention towards the worthy cause.
