Use water sparingly

Water supply expected to be back to normal over the weekend.

A water shortage is being experienced in the Krugersdorp area, the town’s water supplier Rand Water confirmed.

They are appealing to residents to use water sparingly to allow the reservoirs, which currently vary from empty to very low levels, to fill up.

This follows after Rand Water’s Eikenhof pumping station south of Johannesburg experienced a 12-hour loss of power supply that left taps dry in several areas in Johannesburg and on the West Rand since Monday.

Lynn Pannall and Anette Fourie, DA ward councillors for the Noordheuwel, Kenmare and Monument areas confirmed that there is a shortage.

“We are busy writing to the Mogale City Local Municipality, asking them to deploy tankers as water is a basic human right,” says Pannall.

She says the water supply has been reduced to just a trickle since 3pm yesterday afternoon.

Fourie says she received an sms notification last night just before 11pm that Rand Water is busy pumping water into the reservoirs.

“We have sent smses and appealed to residents via the Community Policing Forum’s two-way radios to use water only for normal household purposes until it is back to the required levels in the reservoirs.”

She says the water shortage might continue tomorrow.

Justice Mohale, spokesperson at Rand Water says the rise in temperatures contributed to the higher demand for water and put pressure on their bulk water supply.

The demand also increases when people return from work and from their daily errands.

“Since Rand Water is pumping water at its maximum level, we expect normal water supply over the weekend,” he says.

The news contacted several schools and the spokesperson at the Netcare Bell Street Hospital in Noordheuwel, who say that at the moment they are not affected.
