Best of the West at KHS

More than 700 pupils from 20 different schools from around the country came together at Krugersdorp High School to show their sporting skills.

Over 700 pupils gave their all at the Best of the West tournament hosted by Krugersdorp High School (KHS) this past weekend.

More than 20 schools from as far as Vryheid, Tzaneen and Bloemfontein participated in sporting codes such as Fast 5 hockey, Fast 5 netball and 7s rugby matches of the two-day tournament.

Lauren Jooste-Coetsee, marketing director at KHS says they were proud to be the hosts as it was the first tournament of its kind in the country on school level.

The school also hosted the first-ever Best of the West Festival earlier this year, but adds, “This tournament was played in a different format than the one for the festival.”

She says many of the local schools including Hoërskool Florida and Maragon Private Schools participated.

Krugersdorp High School’s Brittany Abdinor aim for a goal against Hoërskool Pietersburg in the Cup Finals.

“With the exciting new, innovative, fast-paced formats of the various sports, it was a weekend of great sporting fun for all the boys and girls who participated in the games.”

KHS’s Open Girls with Hoërskool Pietersburg in the Cup Finals, which was a real nail-biter. After 20 minutes the two sides had level scores of 19 each. They then went into extra time and KHS came out victorious with the score at 5-4.

The Opens 7s Cup winner was Hoërskool Monument who met Hoërskool Garsfontein in the finals. The final score was 24-12. Both teams will be participating in the Champions of Champions Tournament in Skukuza in Mpumalanga next month.

The Open Girls Hockey was won by Fourways High School who dominated the Opens Girls tournament. The final score was 3-2.

The Open Boys Cup was won by KHS who played in a great game against Fourways and beat them 4-3. The Shield was won by Florida 5-4 in a tense match against Monument.
