Surprise party for Peace ma-Africa
A local orphanage desperately need help; proving that a little can go a long way.
Representatives from Collect-a-Can and CAN DO! (Nampak Bevcan’s consumer facing brand) visited Peace ma-Africa orphanage on Mandela Day for a surprise party.
The party was held for the 25 orphans who received toys as well as donations of food, toiletries and other necessities.
The leaky shack is home to the 25 Peace ma-Africa orphans and Phindile Nkwanyana, their beloved mother.
“Phindile is a woman with a very big heart and the children, although abandoned and despite their living conditions, are full of love and joy because of her,” says Zimasa Velaphi, public relations and marketing manager for Collect-a-Can.
Nkwanyana provides the children with a safe haven and cooks for them on her old coal stove.
“Unfortunately, she does not have a formal job and she therefore depends heavily on support and donations from others to care for the children,” explains Alexandra Bouwer, marketing manager for Nampak Bevcan’s CAN DO! brand.
“Peace ma-Africa definitely needs our help,” says Gloria Mswana, owner of Chaff Pozzy tavern in Kagiso who is currently the main supplier of food for the children.
She holds Peace ma-Africa orphanage very close to her heart and is constantly on the lookout for opportunities to drum up extra support for the little ones.
“As a local business owner I feel privileged and proud to support such a worthy charity in my community and I want to appeal to the community to get involved as well,” says Mswana.
Mswana and Nkwanyana are in the process of trying to acquire land from the municipality and support in the form of sponsorships to help build a house for the children.
“The shack leaks water, so when it rains we get wet and this means that the children often get sick,” explains Nkwanyana.
“Realising the dream we have to build a house for the children and it is no easy task,” says Mswana.
“Alpha Cement has offered to donate some cement towards the building of the house and we are very grateful, but there is still much more that is needed to help make our dream a reality.”
