‘For the love of nature’ at Garden World

Come and take a break from the late-winter blues and join Garden World in Muldersdrift at their Spring Festival.

It is that time of the year, the Spring Festival at Garden World is back.

Come and take a break from the late-winter blues from July 25 to August 31 and reconnect with nature, nurture the earth and walk on the wild side with this year’s theme ‘For the love of nature’.

Ten new designer gardens and four revamped gardens, including the winning 2013 gardens awaits to be viewed.

This year the participating garden designers include award-winning Leon Kluge, known for his modern, contemporary landscapes, and Sonita Young, designer of the Aquaponics edible garden two years ago.

Also making its return is the 2014 Kirstenbosch South Africa Chelsea Flower Show exhibit that will be at Chelsea for the 39th year and is going for its 34th gold medal.

‘In Harmony with Nature’ features vegetation from four natural habitat types, including the ‘Enchanted Forest’ habitat at Kirstenbosch featuring the ‘Boomslang’ (tree snake), the name of the Centenary Tree Canopy Walkway that is designed to mimic the sinuous skeletal frame of a snake.

Visitors are invited to spend a morning with co-designer David Davidson this Friday 25 July to stimulate their curiosity by finding out everything that goes into the making of a medal-winning exhibit.

Other much-loved annual attractions at the festival are ten school gardens, children’s box gardens and the floral exhibits of the Gauteng Flora Union.

Events include workshops with herb expert Margaret Roberts, television personality Tanya Visser on 30 August, garden writer Jane Griffiths, and two children’s workshops such as making bird feeders, pot painting and sand art.

North West University (formerly Potchefstroom University) is a new exhibitor and they will be alongside Rand Water’s Water Wise Exhibit and Sanbi (Walter Sisulu Botanical Garden).

• Garden World is on Beyers Naudé Drive in Muldersdrift. Entrance to the Designer Gardens is R20 per person and children under 12 years can view it for free.
