Start now to improve matric results

The early bird catches the worm, and that seems to be the approach of the Gauteng Department of Education.

In order to sustain province’s positive matric results momentum, the Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) has resumed the annual Secondary School Improvement Programme (SSIP).

This year the programme started in April and will be providing support to 435 priority schools across Gauteng.

The programme, a research-driven intervention strategy, gives extra tuition classes by expert teachers to Grade 12, 11 and 10 pupils on Saturdays and during school holidays.

It targets the following areas of learning: Maths, Maths Literacy, Accounting, Physical Science, Life Science, History and Geography.

Tutors selected to participate in the programme have a proven track record of good results in the targeted subjects. Attendance is monitored by managers from all levels to ensure that pupils attend the classes.

SSIP was officially launched in 2009 to improve and sustain matric results in the province. It is part of the intervention tools that GDE has been utilising to support matric pupils with their studies. The programme is aimed at improving the matric results of under-performing schools.

Grades 10 and 11 are the feeder pupils to the SSIP Grade 12 classes. These classes are offered to ensure uniformity and to close educational gaps before the pupils reach Grade 12. This allows intervention to start early.
