Ranch ‘resident’ falls into deep hole

A rescue mission was conducted and the resident soon was brought to safety.

Heia Safari Ranch in Muldersdrift recently was turned into some kind of a construction site as obstacles were being prepared for the well-know Warrior Race to be held at the ranch in February.

Wondering around on the premises an eminent resident to the ranch fell into a five-metre hole.

No one knew about her mission to explore and it was through her best friends’ emotional cries that staff noticed that she had gone missing.

A search was conducted and staff at Heia Safari looked everywhere.

Finally Zonkey, the ranch’s famous donkey-zebra crossing was found trapped.

“The area was cordoned off but Zonkey (34) who is completely blind in the one eye and only has five per cent sight in the other must have walked right through the barrier tape, causing her to end up in the hole where ranch manager Gaby Burgmer finally found her, unharmed,” says Bianca Rogers, one of the managers.

A rescue operation was started and soon a path had been dug for Zonkey to walk out.

“It was not that easy though. Zonkey was a bit panicked, but after a motivational speech and some food, I and another manager Katja Wetter managed to convince Zonkey to take the long walk to freedom,” says Bianca.

Zonkey trapped and miserable.

Zonkey soon was reunited with her donkey friend Jack who had cried and searched for her throughout the day,

The two friends since have been moved to Bianca’s garden where Jack once again can be Zonkey’s eyes and where there are no holes or ditches that could pose any danger.

Zonkey exits unharmed.
