Retirement village is ready to make memories

The Featherbrooke Hills Retirement Village is welcoming new residents after the first phase of the development was completed.

The Featherbrooke Hills Retirement Village was abuzz with activity as the new residents in the qualifying age of above 50 were occupying the completed first phase on 1 August.

The total development will see 493 living units offering residents with a service centre and a frail-care facility.

Paul Williams, general manager of the retirement village, says that the service centre will offer an array of services such as an industrial kitchen serving meals in the dining room as well as a community hall for gatherings and functions hosted by the development for its residents.

Other amenities include a hair salon, convenience shop and doctor’s consulting rooms.

There will be a fully operational 30-bed frail-care facility for those needing medical assistance and their rates are very competitive.

Included in the first phase handover were 102 simplex living units along with 49 living units in the service centre building.

“It is a very big accomplishment when one considers that development only started in February 2012 and construction commenced early this year,” says Williams.

“The site has been extremely challenging to say the least. With approximately 50 metres height difference from the top of the site to the bottom, the developer made a huge investment in retaining systems and earthworks to ensure the correct levels for living units.”

He says that the developer also ensured that the service building had back-up water supply, and a generator was installed ensuring that lifts and essential services will be operational in the event of a power failure.

A service to offer home-based care in the living units is available, panic buttons were fitted in all the units that can be used to alert staff members of any emergencies, and there is a shuttle service to take the residents to places such as shopping centres.

Williams says that retiring is not always an easy decision but as one gets older one has to start thinking about it.

“It is time to consider who will take care of you when you become frail and what will happen when you require home-based care while recovering from an operation or falling ill. Most importantly one needs to ask: can you afford to retire?”

This is where Central Developments, the developer, found a niche in the market by offering affordable retirement solutions that offer the essential services needed as one grows old.

“An important aspect to keep in mind is that the development is sold as sectional title units and not life right as in most cases.”

This means that Central Development also has tapped into the investment market with projected returns of between 15 and 18 per cent.

One of the completed living units that is currently on show.

The investment market also has opened up the development to people looking to rent rather than to buy, with a variety of units available for rental with immediate occupation at rates starting from R4 000.

“In the end the best way to experience this amazing development is to go and view it yourself,” concludes Williams.

The development is on show daily from Monday to Sunday from 9am to 5pm.
