Man dies and several injured on R28

Both vehicles were damaged extensively in a head-on collision.

A man was killed, another two left with serious injuries, and a fourth man and two young children suffered minor injuries following a head-on collision on the R28 near West Village in Krugersdorp. The accident occurred on 5 July at about 7.30pm.

Paramedics from ER24, Netcare 911 and QRS Ambulance Services arrived at the scene to find that a Opel Corsa hatchback and a Mercedes-Benz sedan had collided head-on with such severe force that the fronts of both vehicles were damaged extensively.

Vanessa Jackson, spokesperson for ER24 says that paramedics found the driver of the Mercedes in a stable condition and he was taken to hospital by QRS Ambulance Services.

“ER24 transported the front passenger of the vehicle, who sustained severe injuries including broken bones and suspected internal injuries, to Leratong Hospital for further care.”

Two men, and a young boy and girl around the age of seven, allegedly were travelling in the Corsa at the time of the collision.

“Upon arrival, paramedics found one of the men lying underneath the Corsa. He had suffered fatal injuries and was declared dead on scene. Although it was stated on scene that he had been an occupant of the Corsa, this has yet to be confirmed by an investigation by local authorities.”

One patient from the Corsa suffered severe injuries and was transported to Leratong Hospital along with the two children, who had suffered only minor injuries.

Exact details to the cause of the accident and preceding events will remain the subject of a police investigation.
