Armed robbery suspects arrested

A couple was held at gunpoint for two cell phones and a small amount of cash.

Two suspects were arrested on 6 June for an alleged armed robbery committed last month.

The suspects aged 22 and 34 years old were taken into police custody after a case was opened for armed robbery on 31 May by two complainants.

It is alleged that a couple was walking along Kagiso extension 13 towards the stadium on 31 May when they were approached by three armed suspects. The complainant’s girlfriend was talking on her cell phone at this time.

“Along the way three suspects approached the couple, demanding their money and cell phones while pointing a firearm at the complainant,” says Solomon Sibiya, spokesperson for the Kagiso SAPS.

After the complainant’s girlfriend handed over her cell phone, one of the suspects started searching the couple for other valuable belongings.

The suspects took two cell phones along with R240 in cash and fled the scene by car.

The complainant’s girlfriend, who noted the suspect’s car, went to police to report the matter.

Police arrested the suspects a few days after the incident and found the complainants belongings and a firearm in their possession.

A case docket of armed robbery was opened at Kagiso police station and the suspects are due to appear in Kagiso Magistrates’ Court soon.
