WATCH: Kagiso’s Koketso a cinematic gem

Film-maker from Kagiso, Kay Jay, tells his story of how he got into the film industry.

Koketso Mhlongo, better known as Kay Jay, is a filmmaker from Kagiso who wants to inspire the next generation.

Born in Pretoria and raised in the picturesque Bushbuckridge in Mpumalanga, Koketso moved to Krugersdorp for better opportunities. His journey into music and film-making began at a young age as he was surrounded by cultural diversity and artistic influences.

His connection to music deepened as he discovered various genres and artists. These influences then fueled his ambition to pursue a career in music and film-making despite the hurdles he faced along the way.

To further enrich his experiences, Kay Jay took on roles as an extra in popular local soap operas such as Generations and Rhythm City.

According to Kay Jay, this exposure helped him understand the intricacies of production and performance, amplifying his passion for storytelling.

Having worked alongside seasoned professionals offered him a glimpse into the industry’s demands where he then started his own production company. He has since also launched his own YouTube channel, Universal Dreamers.

“In August, I also released my pilot film, Break-out, which received positive feedback from viewers, generating excitement and anticipation for my future projects. As I continue to develop my projects, it will be exciting to see how I transform challenges into opportunities in the ever-evolving world of entertainment.

“The vibrant culture of my upbringing instilled my passion for creative expression, which shaped my future endeavours. I was inspired by the likes of Eminem’s Rap God, especially his iconic track, Lose Yourself. I also learned the invaluable lesson that determination and patience are keys to success,” he concluded.
