Alleged drunk minibus driver hits child in Mindalore

The driver attempted to flee the scene. He was eventually tracked down and confronted.

A child had to be transported to hospital after being hit by a minibus taxi driver along Van Zyl and Ham Street in Mindalore on Tuesday afternoon, September 17.

According to an eyewitness, he heard a loud bang and when he went to see what was going on, a child was lying in the street. The taxi driver then sped off.

Another eyewitness and resident Nicky Gomes said they eventually tracked down and confronted the driver.

“A security guard brought the driver back to the scene and when we confronted him, I smelled alcohol,” Gomes said.

Another eyewitness said he also saw the taxi driver hit the little girl. He too chased after the driver and broke the windscreen of the taxi to mark it as the driver attempted to flee the scene.

Phillip du Toit, the victim’s brother who was with his sister when the incident occurred, said he saw the driver throw a beer bottle in a nearby garden.

The taxi driver refused to comment at this stage.

Krugerdorp police were on the scene and arrested the driver.

The victim was transported to hospital and the Krugersdorp News will keep the public updated about her condition.
