Free Wi-Fi rolled out in Kromdraai

Kromdraai residents will be happy to hear that they now have access to free Wi-Fi which is offered by the Gauteng Government.

Residents of Kromdraai received an early Christmas present from the government which provided free Wi-Fi access.

The Gauteng government activated the Gauteng Provincial Network (GPN) Wi-Fi on July 21 at the local library and Matla Combined School.

According to Gauteng e-Government MEC Bonginkosi Dhlamini, the GPN Wi-Fi provided is to modernise government services in the province.

“The department’s main role is to roll out broadband connectivity which seeks to connect all public facilities such as schools and hospitals. It also provides free public Wi-Fi for Gauteng communities,” he said.

The MEC unveiled the sites and added Wi-Fi will ensure that Gauteng residents have free access to the internet, enabling them to participate in digital activities that can further their education, skills and career prospects.

“As a government, we want to ensure that Gauteng residents can access services through digital means. Nowadays, we do not expect people to wait in long queues to access certain services that can easily be accessed online. This can only be achieved through the power of technology and connectivity,” Dhlamini continued.

Executive Mayor of Mogale City Danny Thupane mentioned that his community struggles a lot with connectivity because it is situated on the outskirts of the West Rand.

“We are very excited about this opportunity. It is not only the network that is an issue in these parts but our people struggle with the ever-increasing prices of data. This project will go a long way in allowing our people to access the internet and participate in the digital world,” Thupane said.
