Riding high in the BMX world

Vincent Leygonie, originally from Krugersdorp, is set to perform internationally in BMX competitions.

Vincent Leygonie, a former Noordheuwel resident, is set to compete in another international freestyle BMX competition.

The 26-year-old has been riding for the last 12 years but now reached an elite level – this includes following a unique diet and strict training programmes. According to Vincent, elite-level training means that he has to do three to four jump combinations including flips and spins.

Furthermore, Vincent is set to compete in an Olympic qualifier competition in Shanghai on May 16 and the last qualifier will be in Budapest in June. Having already qualified for the Olympics, Vincent is simply waiting for the South African Cycling Federation for confirmation for him to compete in the 2024 Paris Summer Olympic Games. This means he will potentially be the first African to compete in freestyle BMX. He is also set to attend to the BMX World Championships in Abu Dhabi in December.

He is preparing for these events with an intense gym programme, cycles every day and tries to ride his BMX four times a week although he says it is difficult to do so with a lack of facilities and a full-time job.

“I work hard and I love riding, even though I had to make many sacrifices to get where I am,” says Vincent.
