Swaneville urged to play crime-fighting role

Residents of Swaneville have been urged by police to play a bigger role in the fight against crime.

Crime prevention initiatives such as Operation Shanela continue to make strides in the fight against crime.

But while cops are tasked to ensure the safety of everyone in their respective communities, they cannot always do it alone. Hence they sporadically count on the public to be their eyes and ears, educating them to play a bigger role.

During a recent Operation Shanela, Kagiso Police Station Commander Brigadier Nyelisani Mabatha and Randfontein Police Station Commander Brigadier Mashole Manamela took the time to address and interact with members of the community of Swaneville.

According to West Rand District Police spokesperson Captain Solomon Sibiya, Swaneville is one of the areas considered to be a crime hotspot where many violent, contact and property-related crimes occur.

Since its launch in May 2023, Operation Shanela has seen more than 55 600 suspects being arrested for various crimes. It consists of regular stop and searches, roadblocks, vehicle checkpoints, high visibility patrols (including foot patrols), the tracing of wanted suspects (with a focus on murder and rape suspects), and compliance inspections at liquor outlets and second-hand goods dealers.

Swaneville community members were encouraged to regularly engage with the police, file reports, and volunteer to be part of community policing forums.
