Municipality warns job seekers of latest scam

Vulnerable job seekers are being ripped off and the local municipality warns community members.

Mogale City Local Municipality’s (MCLM) Human Capital division wishes to warn residents of job scams that have once again resurfaced.

In the latest scam, job seekers are required to pay R3 700 for a pre-employment medical assessment to secure a job with the municipality.

MCLM communication officer Refilwe Mahlangu has since provided some tips for job seekers to identify whether they are being scammed or not:

• Applying for employment in the municipality is free, anyone asking for money is breaking the law
• All vacant positions, tenders, and quotations are only advertised in targeted national newspapers and on the municipal website (www.mogalecity.gov.za)
• If the job listing is not on the municipal website, it does not exist. Those are posing as consultants or using online media platforms as fraudsters
• If you do not contact Mogale City for a job but the municipality supposedly contacts you with a job offer then it is a scam. They have found your CV online and used your details to target you
• Mogale City never sends shortlisted candidates job offers or invitations via SMS or emails
• Mogale City does not request upfront payments for land, RDP homes, property for sale, or other product offerings

“If you suspect to have received fraudulent communication from the municipality please do not co-operate with their requests. We urge you to contact the nearest police station,” Mahlangu added.
