Mogale City mayoral cup ends in memorable fashion

Mayor's Cup this last Sunday saw various clubs receive top prizes.

November 26 was the day in which the Mogale City Mayor’s Cup reached a thrilling conclusion.

Mogale City residents showed their presence at Munsieville Sports Complex to witness the final day of the tournament and show support to numerous local clubs that were showcasing their talent in the various sports matches held on the day.

The Mogale City men’s team is in action against a West Rand Invitational team in the senior division.

The tournament began on October 14 and saw several clubs across Mogale City from Magaliesburg, Kagiso, and Aazaadville compete against one another for the ultimate prize. The tournament featured netball and football games with players from several age groups in action. The special divisions also included seniors, masters, and an exhibition match between Mogale City and West Rand invitational teams.

The tournament is a major sports development instrument in Mogale City under the tutelage of Executive Mayor Danny Thupane. It is a contest that aims to develop local sports, encourage healthy lifestyles amongst youth and adults, increase social cohesion, and take youth off the streets in our townships but most importantly, elevate players to the elite sports structures.

The tournament had 13 boys’ soccer teams, 16 master’s soccer teams, eight ladies’ soccer teams, and 32 seniors’ teams competing for top honours in each division. Not only was the tournament an event to compete for top prizes but it was also an opportunity for many clubs, players, and scouts to identify the next future soccer stars who can hopefully raise the flag for South African football as a whole.

Many teams made a name for themselves during the tournament such as Munsieville Glacticos who beat VT United in the senior men’s final. Other teams that flourished on the day included junior teams such as Nicko Taurus Football Academy who beat Bright Stars Academy in the final of the junior women’s division.
