Mental health and youth: District health urges parents to do more

West Rand Health District held a seminar for parents and children to create a dialogue between children and their parents to talk about mental health.

Matriculants have started their final exams and for many, it is a stressful and anxious time.

On November 1, the West Rand Health District and various stakeholders addressed over 50 children and parents to give them advice and educate them on such mental health challenges. The programme was organised by Tshegofatso Mosadi.

According to Tshegofatso, many learners suffer during exams as a result of the pressure put on them by parents, teachers and fellow peers. What children need are guidance and a shoulder to cry on.

“A common mistake that parents make with regards to their children is neglect their mental well-being as exams commence. Too often, we think that it is up to the school and teachers to ensure that children succeed academically but this should not be the case,” she said.

The programme provided parents with various ideas and advice on how to communicate and collaborate with their children during exams. The tips ranged from assisting children with time management, consulting with teachers on prioritising study material, and creating a safe environment for them to study and focus.

Victoria Masuku was among the guest speakers.

Parents were also advised to refer to the tips provided by the South African College of Applied Psychology.

Some of the tips are:

• Provide a stress-free study environment for their children
• Communicate with your children with care
• Promote a balanced and healthy lifestyle for your children
