• Marvelling at the spring flowers
Melville Koppies can’t begin to compete with the annual spring flower show in Namaqualand. But our spring flowers, just like Joburg residents, display an incredible resilience to overcome the challenges thrown at them. Unlike most Namaqualand flowers, the early spring flowers on Melville Koppies don’t rely on rain to get them going. Most are hardy perennials that die back in winter because they have found ways to store food underground during the cold winter months and be ready to sprout again when the warmth returns. Some have bulbs bigger than a man’s fist while others rely on thick woody roots, many of which become like giant sweet potatoes over time.
Book a guided flower tour, marvel at their varied colours and learn their names. Safe parking (opposite the Melville Koppies entrance) at Marks Park Sports Club in Judith Road, Emmarentia. R100pp, R50 for U18. More details: 079 532 0083 wendavid@mweb.co.za, www.mk.org.za https://www.facebook.com/melvillekoppies
