Kagiso residents welcome spring with a girls only walk

The Girls Grow Group ended Women's Month and welcomed spring with a Fun Walk for girls.

Residents of Kagiso had much to smile about on the second day of spring when the Girls Grow Group held a Fun Walk for girls recently.

Over 100 girls and community members made their way to the streets of Kagiso to support the initiative and the purpose was to bring awareness towards the mental and physical well-being of young women and girls. Throughout the initiative, the girls were also taught about dieting and nutrition as well as the importance of physical exercises. They were then given some guidance on what to do should they ever encounter difficulties in life.

The founder of the group and organiser of the initiative, Nthabiseng Nalene, was happy with the turnout and support they received from the community on the day.

“I wish to see young girls be supported in our community. This has to be taken seriously and we also have to listen to their point of view. Young girls need to be empowered and you do this by instilling confidence. Some of them are emotionally and mentally drained and we cannot leave them helpless and vulnerable. It’s important to have girls involved in sports and life programmes in the future.”
