Serious childhood cancer and safety talk at Jan de Klerk

The Krugersdorp Police along with many stakeholders embarked on another school safety awareness campaign, this time visiting Jan De Klerk High School to address learners about crime and safety.

Joining the local police and various other SAPS departments were Thifhelimbilu Makhado from Co-Operative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) as well as Eunice Thaane from the Childhood Cancer Foundation South Africa (CHOC).

Krugersdorp Police’s social crime prevention coordinator Warrant Officer Fritz Terblanche and social crime prevention officer Sergeant Patricia Tshifularo first addressed the learners about bullying, fighting, cyber crimes, child justice, gambling, gender-based violence, sexual offences, drugs and substance abuse.

Thaane then took the opportunity to speak to learners about childhood cancer and how to improve the survival rate.

“More children and teens need to be diagnosed at early stages and treated by a paediatric oncologist,” she said.

To conclude the programme, learners were given childhood cancer and gender-based violence pamphlets that would further explain how they can play their part in ensuring safety for themselves and their peers. As many as 540 learners were reached ranging from grades 8 to 11.
