Teacher shoots knife-wielding man during hostage situation

A teacher shot and killed a knife-wielding man who allegedly held staff hostage in Kagiso.

An upset man was shot and killed when he tried to hold staff hostage at a school in Kagiso early on Friday morning, February 3.

Kagiso Police spokesperson Captain Solomon Sibiya said at about 07:30, an unknown 22-year-old man entered Kagiso secondary school (high school) and demanded to speak to the principal.

The staff was in a meeting in the staff room when the suspect entered. He allegedly held the staff hostage while wielding a knife,” Captain Sibiya explained.

One of the teachers managed to get away and ran to his car where he grabbed a firearm. The teacher then fired one shot into the air but the suspect charged him. The 22-year-old then stabbed the teacher in the arm. During the scuffle, the teacher fired a few shots, one of which hit the man in his upper body and the other in his lower body.

“The teacher was rushed to hospital in a stable condition whereas the suspect was certified dead on scene.”

The Kagiso Police has opened an inquest docket.
