K’dp team wins historical Gold Rush tourney

A total of 36 teams and 144 players from all over the Sables district locked horns on the greens at Krugersdorp Bowling Club in the historical Gold RushTournament.

It just had to be a home team.

The mixed 4s team of Gavin and Elysses Heine, Mike Samson and Mabs Reece flew the Krugersdorp flag high after being crowned winners of the historical Gold Rush Tournament held over two days at Krugersdorp Bowling Club on October 8 and 9.

According to Krugersdorp Bowling Club spokesperson David Parker, the tournament was the idea of a couple of members back in the late 1970s. Some of the honorary members are still alive today.

“The first tournament took place in 1977 on a Sunday. It has been played every year since then with the exception of the last two years due to the pandemic. It has proven to be so popular that it is now played over two days.”

David said a total of 36 teams and 144 players participated this year.

“The 2022 edition proved to be very competitive as any one of the last four teams could have won it. In the end, Mike, Gavin, Elysses and Mabs hang in there to edge their names on the historical Gold Rush trophy.”

He added, “The format played made it possible that nearly every team could win some money and this proved to be acceptable to the players.”

David further indicated that everyone enjoyed themselves, so much so that a number of them entered their team for next year.

“Please remember that bowls is a game for all ages.”
