Fun athletics day held in Munsieville for pre-schoolers

One of the aims of the day was to teach some skills that are essential to early childhood development.

On Saturday July 24 Very Smart Kids Pre-School hosted a fun athletics event at the Munsieville Sports Complex on Corane Street.

In previous years the annual event was an in-house affair but this time they invited Ikanneg Thuto Daycare to participate in the fun. Despite overcast cold weather hundreds of little future Wayde van Niekerks and Gerda Steyns (and in some cases their parents) competed in different activities such as bean bag racing, spoon racing, sack racing and sprints. The host school’s drum majorettes also strutted their stuff.

According to Very Smart Kids Pre-School’s board chairperson, Ntombizethu Sehoole, the aim was to develop kids’ social skills and to promote a healthy lifestyle filled with physical fun. “These are important parts of early childhood development. Sport teaches children the importance of being a team player. They also learn that it is great to win but okay to lose,” said Sehoole.

Various councillors as well as the current Mrs Africa, Janine Pretorius, were special guests.
