If you are looking for a fun, challenging bike ride, why not join one with a purpose. The Teddy Bear Foundation together with Bothongo Rhino & Lion Nature Reserve, and the Neck & Deck Restaurant will be honouring the youth of 1976 when they host a Youth Day ride.

The ride aims to raise awareness about child abuse, and some much-needed funds for the Teddy Bear Foundation.

The Teddy Bear Clinic for Abused Children was started in 1986 when an urgent need arose for medical examinations for sexually abused children. It has since grown into a full service for abused children and includes forensic medical examinations, forensic assessments, counselling, psychological testing and even a diversion programme for young sexual offenders.

Some of the riders tied teddy bears to their bikes during a previous ride.

They have a two-pronged approach to support not only affected children and their families but also promote “Child Abuse No More”. As always they support abused children through the criminal justice system and ensure that psychological healing takes place, thus ensuring that the child becomes a valuable member of society without the scars of child abuse. They do this through their forensic medical examinations, supportive therapies, forensic evaluations, psychologic testing and court preparation programme for children and their parents.

The second is their diversion programme which they run in partnership with the courts. This programme is for young sex offenders and is designed to redirect a child offender away from the criminal justice system in order to rehabilitate the child into more constructive behaviour. With this they prevent the child from developing into an adult offender which in turn helps them achieve their goal of Child Abuse No More.

But to be able to continue their good work they are in urgent need of funds, and you can help by joining their Youth Day ride on Thursday, June 16 in Kromdraai. It will start at the Neck & Deck at 520 Kromdraai Road in the Cradle of Humankind. The adult ride will be 50km and registration will cost R250. Entry includes breakfast, a teddy bear, medal and goodie bag.
