UPDATE: Police confirm CIT heist in Chamdor involving a G4S cash van

The police are looking for a group of thugs following a cash-in-transit (CIT) robbery in Krugersdorp on Monday.

National police spokesperson Colonel Atlenda Mathe said the Gauteng Police are working around the clock to hunt down a group of thugs after a confirmed cash-in-transit (CIT) heist in Krugersdorp resulted in an innocent motorcyclist sustaining a gunshot wound.

In a statement Mathe said the CIT heist happened after 18:30 on Monday evening, November 15 when a G4S cash van was on its way from Lenasia to Boltonia.

“While driving on Chamdor Road, the cash van was rammed by a white Mercedes-Benz, causing it to roll and land on its wheels.”

Mathe added that a group of attackers exited several vehicles and instructed the security personnel to open the vault. The personnel were then dragged to a nearby field and robbed of a 9mm pistol.

“Both the cash van and the robbers’ Mercedes-Benz burst into flames after they had bombed the cash van.”

The News reported earlier that a motorcyclist was also shot during the robbery, and Mathe confirmed this.

“A motorcyclist who witnessed what transpired was shot in his lower body and taken to a nearby hospital for medical attention.”

The G4S security personnel were also taken to a local hospital where they were treated for minor injuries.

Mathe said it is believed that the robbers got away with an undisclosed amount of money, and left the scene in a grey light delivery vehicle and two white sedans.

“Police are appealing to members of the public to assist police with investigations by sharing vital information on the whereabouts of the robbers. Members of the public are also reminded that it is a crime to harbour criminals.”
