Over 40 drunk drivers among 201 arrested on West Rand

Another crime prevention and intelligence-driven operation held over the weekend in the West Rand yielded positive results.

Police in the West Rand District arrested 201 suspects this past weekend – more than 40 for drunk driving.

This happened during another weekend crime-prevention and intelligence-driven operation, said Sergeant Rebecca Phithi, West Rand District Police spokesperson.

The operations focused on doing stops and searches, and setting roadblocks, and policing places the community thought the police won’t reach them. They also made sure that the lockdown regulations are adhered to as communities believe they can do as they like,” she explained.

Of the 201 suspects arrested, two were for murder, two for attempted murder, two for rape and two for arson, 25 for possession of drugs, 14 for assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm, and 10 for common assault.

Another three were arrested for malicious damage to property, four for housebreaking and theft, 13 for theft, three for possession of stolen property, three for dealing in counterfeit goods, and another three for fraud.

Two people were arrested for public violence, 16 for damage to essential infrastructure, four for shoplifting, and seven people for dealing in liquor without a licence.

Major General Fred Kekana, the West Rand District Police Commissioner warned that the integrated approach by police in the West Rand District will continue in their fight against crime.

He added that the police in the District will squeeze the crime to zero tolerance.

“He further stated that a significant, positive effort in the fight against crime will result in safer communities,” said Phiri.

She advised anyone with information regarding any person who commits a crime to report it to the Crime Stop line on 08600 10111, make use of the SMS number on 32211 or use the My SAPS app.
