Power-supply termination postponed for West Rand Power Distributors

Eskom was set to discontinue the power supply to areas falling under the utilities company West Rand Power Distributors on Tuesday 25 February.

In recent correspondence with the media, Eskom announced that they have opted to postpone a complete electricity shutdown of areas under West Rand Power Distributors (WRPD).

On 11 February, Eskom published a notice announcing plans to shut off the electricity supply to WRPD, mainly affecting the West Village residential area. The shutdown was set to take effect on Tuesday, 25 February. Residents of West Village went into the day unsure of whether their electricity would stay on or not.

At about 11.30am on the day the shutdown would’ve occurred, Eskom released the following statement: “The final noticed published on 7 February 2020 to disconnect the bulk electricity supply of WRPD on 25 February 2020 has been postponed to 3 March 2020, or to an alternative date which will be provided by the Pretoria High Court due to a court application from WRPD and others”.

WRPD responded by saying, “In essence the press release is correct, but WRPD wants to emphasise that the notice period has not been extended; the court has ordered Eskom not to disconnect the power supply to WRPD until it makes a ruling regarding the application”.
