[2019 RECAP] Looking back at sporting highlights from January to April of 2019

There were some great sporting highlights during the first four months of 2019.

The beginning of the year saw some impressive sporting headlines.

Let’s take a look here:

January:

• Disabled cyclist compete in the toughest cycle challenge. The News chats to the West Rand Association for the Physically Disabled’s Andrico van Aarde who competed in the tough Telkom 947 Challenge of 2018.

• Paddle partners get ready for Dusi. Paul Nel and Renier Kruger took on the 37km Dusi canoeing race.

• Krugersdorp-tennisster Shannon Cox is vyfde onder die topspelers in Suid-Afrika.

• Plaaslike rugbyster nou deel van Stormers. Chris Massyn van Laerskool Kenmare en Hoërskool Monument het deel geword van die Stormers-span.

February:

• Former Springbok players visit Hoërskool Bastion. Gcobani Bobo, Morgan Newman and Conrad Jantjies taught new and professional rugby tactics to the rugby boys.

• Race car enthusiasts practise for champs. The Krugersdorp Model Racers talked about their upcoming championship and showed what competitive remote control racing looks like.

• Norie stars tear up the track. More than 1 000 track and field athletes competed at the second Puma School of Speed athletics meet.

Deziré Nortje from Hoërskool Noordheuwel managed to finish in a highly respectable third place.

• Norie-aflos beïndruk skare — die kleintjies van Laerskool Krugersdorp-Noord het alles gegee op hul heel eerste atletiekdag van die jaar.

March:

• Die jaarlikse MasterCoach-rugbykonferensie wat sowat 100 professionele en skole-afrigters lok, is dié jaar by Hoërskool Noordheuwel aangebied.

• Arm wrestlers from all over the country show their strength at a national event in Krugersdorp to compete at the National Championship for Arm Wrestling in South Africa.

• Exciting nail-biting finish at cycle race. The Berge and Dale served up an exciting finish as two teenagers battled it out over the last few hundred metres of the race. Jason Oosthuizen edged Marc Pritzen to the line.

• Primary schools battle it out in netball’s Best of the West. 119 schools from in and around Gauteng competed in one of the biggest netball tournaments, which was held at KHS.

• Bringing karate to the kids of Kagiso. Teenagers Sello Mathoko and Seramo Sello took it on themselves to start a karate club and teach the children in Kagiso.

April:

• Hoërskool Noordheuwel klop Volkies in PUK Reeks.

• Local BMX star Vincent Leygonie speaks about his BMX career, giving advice to youngsters wanting to get into the competitive sport.

• Celine van Rheede van Oudtshoorn en Ruan Nel van die Wesrand Stoeigimnasium het goed gevaar tydens die SA Presidente-toernooi

• Andrew White from Muldersdrift’s Logwood Village competed in the 2019 World Golfers Tournament which is part of the Special Olympics, and won.
