Uncertainty about the gunfire heard around Krugersdorp during the night

The News has contacted different authorities about the gunshots heard near Munsieville on Monday night, but not much is known at this stage.

Reports of a shooting in the Krugerdorp/ Munsieville area started coming in after 10pm on Monday night, 13 May.

The News has spent most of the morning of Tuesday, 14 May, trying to get more information from various sources. However, the little information gathered does not clarify what happened or who was involved.

Many Krugersdorpers noted that they heard multiple gunshots between 10pm and 11pm. Reports differ on where the gunshots originated from, some saying that it was near West Village, others noting that it was in Krugersdorp West, near Dan Pienaarville or the Rant-en-Dal area. The general consensus is that it occurred near the Munsiville informal settlement. Residents also reported having counted between 40 and 50 gunshots at various intervals.

The Krugersdorp Police’s spokesperson was contacted for comment, but the News was told that they’ve not had reports of gunfire; however, they will contact us if any information becomes available. At the time of writing, nothing further has been heard.

The Sector 3 Community Policing Forum (CPF) headed into the streets when the gunfire was heard, searching for the perpetrators. Piet Sparks, an executive member of the CPF, noted that it is very difficult to pinpoint where sounds originate from at night, as sound carries a long way.

It’s also difficult to find perpetrators in the streets, in the dark, when no one is sure which area they are in.

A post on the Facebook group BAAGI BA Mogale City asked that residents of Munsieville not be alarmed as it was simply a car backfiring. For many, this doesn’t add up, as the sounds happened too rapidly and in quick succession at times. Many also noted that what they heard is not what a car backfiring sounds like, but the sound of gunfire.

The general belief is that this was a part of the ongoing turf war between the illegal miners in the West Rand, but this has not yet been confirmed by any authoritative body.

The News will publish an update if any further information is made public.
