‘If one of us hurts, we should all feel the pain’

Pastor Gerrit Mes; from the pulpit.

Sometimes a bad thing can turn out to be a positive experience.

During the Christmas holidays I received a call that a break-in was in progress at our church. Shocked I rushed to the church. On my arrival I found neighbours, the Community Policing Forum and the intoxicated thief.

Soon the security company, the police, more neighbours and passers-by all came to help. The good news is, nothing was stolen, no one got hurt and I realised that we live in an amazing community. I really do not believe that no one cares. The crowd and all the flashing lights proved to me that people really do care.

We all, at times, feel that no one cares, but they do care. It sometimes takes a bad thing to make us realise how lucky or blessed we are. Not one of us knows what 2019 holds. It is good to know that we are part of a family, a community, a nation that is full of people who care.

Jesus once said, if one of us hurts, we should all feel the pain.

The ability to feel a stranger’s pain is a clear sign of God’s presence in our lives.

A friend in need is a friend indeed. “By this shall all men know that you are my disciples, that you love one another.” Words spoken by Jesus.

To have friends, you must be willing to be a friend.
