A friend in deed

Pastor Gerrit Mes; from the pulpit.

It would be unthinkable to put me in the cockpit of a 747 jet and expect me to fly people to Cape Town.

I have no training and zero experience as a pilot. It would be even more unfair to the passengers. That will never happen, you say. No one can expect you to do that without proper training.

But right now, thousands of Grade 12 pupils are being expected to make career decisions that will affect the rest of their lives. Most of them are probably not equipped to make that decision.

Every Saturday, thousands of couples stand in front of ministers, saying, “I do.” Are they equipped to make that statement? Probably not.

Making major decisions with lifelong consequences without proper training is a guaranteed smash waiting to happen. A smash that we are not equipped to handle.

How can you make better decisions? It is nice to have someone close to you wiser than yourself. Someone who knows you better than you know yourself and has the added advantage of knowing the future.

My parents encouraged me to allow God to play a role in my decision-making. Maybe that’s what helped me choose a career and a life-time partner.

But God in His wisdom has also allowed me to taste failure and defeat – two things we all face in life. Now I feel better equipped to make decisions and to deal with failure. Pray before you do it!
