The recent rains we have been experiencing appear to have caused an outbreak of what I like to call ‘dumb driver syndrome’.

What is it with rain that causes motorists to drive like they have no clue how to do it? Have you noticed that the moment it starts raining, everyone on the road immediately goes into overdrive, excuse the pun?

In my experience, you get two kinds of ‘dumb drivers’. The first are the drivers who think they can out-drive the rain by speeding up. The second type consists of those who do not know how to handle their vehicles in wet conditions. Both these categories of driver also clearly forget the rules of the road.

Drivers in the first group just make me angry, because they are putting everyone’s lives at risk by speeding on wet roads.

The second group frustrates me, because you need to think for them too while driving in the rain. You need to figure out whether they are going to know when to slow down, or stop, and even what their vehicle is going to do when they pull away too quickly on a wet road.

Most of the drivers in these groups appear to be young, first-time drivers.

My point is that no matter which kind of driver you are, or how long you have been driving, you need to take it easy in wet conditions. Stick to the speed limit, keep a safe following distance and just try to get to wherever you are going safely.

Driving in wet conditions should not be that hard – just be a bit cautious and mindful of the traffic around you, that’s all.

Until next week, take it easy out there, Krugersdorp!
