Day zero a stark reality

The citizens of the Western Cape have some tough decisions to make. They are being prepped for the day they will no longer have any water, but can you really be fully prepared? Let’s be honest, no one thought this day was actually going to come, but it is. Many are moving to areas and …

The citizens of the Western Cape have some tough decisions to make.

They are being prepped for the day they will no longer have any water, but can you really be fully prepared?

Let’s be honest, no one thought this day was actually going to come, but it is.

Many are moving to areas and provinces that do have water, while those who cannot afford to make such extreme decisions are left behind.

The question running around in my head at this very moment is, how are those left behind going to make it? What is this going to do to our economy and our tourism?

I cannot even begin to image the spine-chilling fear those people are living with. Where do they start prioritising what is important?

Again, water collection efforts are being initiated and we are seeing how communities come together to help. But is it going to be enough?

I almost think people are not entirely sure what day zero means. They will however find out with a rude awakening, or a miracle of some sort will happen. Of course I am hoping for the latter.

For those who would like to help, there are many initiatives in town to join in on. Here are a few water collection and drop off points of concern:

• Hoërskool Noordheuwel until Thursday, 1 February

• Laerskool Krugersdorp-Noord until Friday, 2 February

• Naeema Bayat and Gift of the Givers at Netcare Krugersdorp Hospital until 24 February

• Krugersdorp High School until 6 February.

For more information on these collection points, visit each of their Facebook pages.

If you are starting your own collection point, inform us here at the News so that we can make your efforts known to the masses.

Let’s all join our hands and hearts and pray for a miracle and let’s also ask God to help us prepare for something we might not be so prepared for.

Until next week, save water, Krugersdorp … you never know when our day zero may come!
