Cyclists versus motorists

As an objective person on this matter, I find myself siding with the motorist.

There is a small war about to break out on the outskirts of Krugersdorp.

Folks on bicycles and folks in motor vehicles are finding themselves between a rock and a hard place.

On the one hand, you have people minding their own business while driving to and from wherever they are going, and on the other, you have people on bicycles also vying for some space on the road.

After a recent incident at the Cradle of Humankind, in which a cyclist allegedly attacked a motorist, what do you do as an individual? On which side of the fence do you sit? Whose side do you pick?

As an objective person on this matter, I find myself siding with the motorist.

To be completely honest, I do not understand why cyclists toy with their lives the way they do on our roads.

Please believe me when I say that I am a law-abiding citizen who will of course make way for you when you ride your bicycle in the middle of the road. My only question is, why do you do it? Why do you ride in the middle of the road?

No … my apologies, I have two questions – the other being: why do you get aggressive when motorists ask you to move by hooting at you?

My husband is a cyclist and I preach to him every time he goes cycling, telling him to not be a jerk on the road while on his bicycle. It’s for his and the motorists’ safety.

I sympathise with cyclists because there really aren’t enough proper cycling facilities out there catering to their specific needs. I sit at home and pray that my husband returns safely from cycling because I know how overcrowded the Kromdraai area can become.

There must be some common ground on which cyclists and motorists can meet each other?

The road is there for all road users … right?

Something to think about, Krugersdorp. Until next week, ride safely.
