Here is a round up of this year's municipal elections.
Despite a few bumps in the road, the final results for the 2016 elections in Mogale City are in.
The ANC won with 48,84 per cent of the vote, with the DA following closely behind with 34,88 percent, the EFF with 11,65 per cent and the FF Plus 2,29 per cent.
A total of 120 260 votes were recorded, with a 62,3 per cent voter turnout. Only 1 585 of the votes were spoilt.
For the first time ever, the ANC will have to enter a coalition to run Mogale City, as they failed to secure enough votes. In order to run Mogale City, the ANC needed to receive at least 50 per cent of the votes.
In the 2011 election, the ANC received 60,36 per cent of the votes, while the DA received 32,89 per cent of the votes.
From a national perspective, in the district elections, there were a total of 9 301 council seats available.
Following the recent results, they have been divided as follows:
• The African National Congress won 5 080 seats or 48,3 per cent
• The Democratic Alliance won 1 723 seats or 13,8 per cent
• The Economic Freedom Fighters won 731 seats or 6,9 per cent
• The Inkatha Freedom Party won 427 seats or 4,2 percent
• The Freedom Front Plus won 66 seats (0,56 per cent)
• The United Democratic Movement won 58 seats (0,56 per cent)
• The African Independent Congress won 51 seats (0.45 per cent)
• The Congress of the People won 44 seats (0.4 per cent)
• The Forum for Service Delivery won 27 seats (0,29 per cent)
• And independent candidates won 26 seats or 0,25 per cent
• Other political parties won the remaining 225 seats or two per cent
In terms of the 213 municipalities contested:
• The African National Congress achieved a majority in 161 municipalities
• The Democratic Alliance achieved a majority in 19 municipalities
• And the Inkatha Freedom Party achieved a majority in six municipalities
In 26 municipalities no party achieved a majority – which are known as hung councils.
