Hit-and-run suspect hands himself over

The suspect handed himself over after the death of a three-year-old pedestrian.

A 30-year-old man was arrested following the death of a three-year-old toddler in a hit-and-run incident over the weekend.

A case of culpable homicide has been opened after the man, who drove his vehicle into pedestrians in the parking lot of the Rietfontein Spar in Muldersdrift on 3 July, handed himself over.

“It is alleged that the driver drove recklessly, which resulted in him losing control of the vehicle. He drove over the child, killing her instantly. He also severely injured an elderly person. It’s alleged that the suspect failed to stop and drove away from the accident scene without establishing the extent of the injuries he had caused,” Muldersdrift Police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Hitler Ngwenya said.

The injured victim was taken to Leratong Hospital for further medical treatment.

A case docket of culpable homicide was opened and registered with Muldersdrift Police for further investigation. The suspect will appear in the Krugersdorp Magistrates’ Court soon.
