Voting day set, last chance to register

The IEC has welcomed the President's voting date.

This weekend (9 and 10 April) is the last opportunity for residents to register for the local government elections that will be held on 3 August this year.

The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has welcomed the voting date announcement by President Jacob Zuma and said the date falls within the constitutionally-mandated window to host municipal elections between 18 May and 16 August this year.

The IEC said the announcement of the date for the municipal elections created certainty and clarity and allows detailed planning by all stakeholders including the IEC.

The announcement comes ahead of this weekend’s final registration. Voting stations will be open nationwide for registration from 8am to 5pm on 9 and 10 April.

The News previously published these steps on how to register:

• Find your closest voting station by searching on the elections page with either your physical address, GPS coordinate or town’s name. • Once you know where your voting station is, head there on either 9 or 10 April between 8am and 5pm.

• Make sure you remember to bring your South African ID with you – driver’s licence and passports are not allowed.

• Fill in an application form which will be issued to you at the voting station.

• Lastly, scan your ID. The announcement of the election date is not the official proclamation of the municipal elections. This is scheduled to occur later and triggers the election timetable and a range of legislated events, including the official closure of the voters’ roll for the elections.

This means eligible voters can still register and update their registration and address details this weekend at their voting stations and at the Electoral Commission’s local offices until the official proclamation.
