Suspects crash stolen vehicle into ditch

"They had no shame. They didn't even care about making a noise."

A couple had a rude awaking this morning when they were greeted by five housebreaking suspects.

The sound of cupboards being ransacked in the passage woke up the Herbst’s at 3am this morning, 5 April in their Muldersdrift home.

Upon investigating, a suspect was found hiding behind a cupboard door which was slammed in Mr Herbst’s face.

The suspect then immediately made a run for it towards the living room when suddenly three other suspects appeared out of nowhere and came running down the stairway.

As they made their way down the stairs and out the door, Herbst slapped a forth suspect on the back on his way out.

“The suspect then turned around and charged at me and I kicked at his direction. He then ducked and ran away,” Herbst said.

Herbst then ran back to check on his wife when he heard the suspects outside and saw one armed with a knob-kierrie.

In the meanwhile Herbst’s wife contacted the Muldersdrift Police who reacted to the call-out within minutes.

“We were so grateful, within five minutes police were at our house.”

The suspects managed to getaway in Herbst’s Volvo, bumping into two trees as they struggled to reverse the vehicle out of their premises.

They then made their way on the R114 when they lost control of the vehicle and crashed through a barrier in the bend of the road leading out from under the bridge.

Police found the unoccupied Volvo overturned in the ditch with no suspects in sight.

Mrs Herbst’s purse was found a few metres from the wrecked vehicle and their coffee machine was found on the sidewalk next to the barrier.

Among the stolen items were a table, laptops, a cellphone, wallets and home appliances.

This is the second time the Herbst couple was a target of a housebreaking this year.

“They had no shame. They didn’t even care about making a noise, as far as they fled they threw all the unwanted items out of the vehicle,” Mrs Herbst told the News.

Fortunately no-one was hurt during the incident, and the couple believe that it was by God’s grace that they were not harmed or killed.
