One dead as police return fire
A shootout between police and a suspect left one person dead.
A shootout between police and a suspect this afternoon resulted in one person being fatally wounded.
Krugersdorp police received a tip off of two Toyota Tazz vehicles with suspicious looking occupants in around a local cafe in Lewisham just after 2pm.
Police then proceeded to the vehicles to stop and search the occupants, but found nothing suspicious.
Minutes later another suspect, exiting the cafe, suddenly opened fire and randomly shot into the public.
Police then returned fire and started chasing the suspect, ending up in Harvey Street where the suspect was fatally wounded.
“The suspect was declared dead on the scene,” Krugersdorp police spokesperson, Sergeant Tshepiso Mashale, confirmed.
The four streets around the butchery were barricaded while police collected several empty bullet cases from the shooting.
Members of the Sector 9 Community Policing Forum were called for back-up to assist in controlling the curious crowd and assist on the scene.
