Last week I experienced probably one of the most difficult times of my life … physically and emotionally.

I was admitted to hospital with severe abdominal pain and literally thought I was dying.

After blood tests and sonar were done, doctors discovered that I have a severly infected gallbladder with two large gallstones.

Was I shocked … yes.

I thought these types of things only happen to elderly people, or people who live a bad lifestyle. Turns out I was wrong.

After my gallbladder was removed and I showed off my stones to friends and family, today I look back with great appreciation.

Firstly a never thought I would appreciate pain medication like I did last week. We live in a time where things can make life really easy and for that I have found a new appreciation towards modern medicine.

Secondly I have huge appreciation for everyone working in a hospital. It does not look easy. From the woman who admitted me when my husband and I showed up at casualty to the doctor who treated me, the night staff that always made sure I was comfortable to the cleaners who helped me jack up my bed. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Last but certainly not least, I have tremendous appreciation for my support system. My rock star husband who stood by me through everything thing, and trust me, some things were disgusting. To my incredible family, friends and colleagues who visited, called, left messages, sent flowers and who just cared. You guys are truly fantastic! Thank you.

What I learned from this experience is that modern medicine will always be there to help you along the way, but the things that actually mean the most is those standing next to you and behind you.

I am nothing without these people.

Today I have a luminous warm feeling in my heart … oh and about 20 staples in my stomach too.

Take care of yourself Krugersdorp.
