[VIDEO] Man seriously injured in truck collision

A man was seriously injured after a truck skipped the stop street and collided with his bakkie.

A loud noise of sirens overwhelmed residents in Oatlands late last night, 13 August, following a truck collision which left one man seriously injured.

It is believed that an 18-wheeler truck travelling along Engelbreght Street collided with a bakkie on the corner of Wheeler Street after skipping the stop street and crashing through the fence of the house situated of the corner.

Corelette Ernst, an eyewitness, told the News they were driving behind the bakkie when the accident happened.

“I just saw the lights of the bakkie disappear into the truck. When we arrived at the intersection, we saw the impact.”

Ernst called Netcare 911 who arrived on the scene shortly after along with members from the Sector 5 Community Policing Forum (CPF) who assisted in controlling the scene.

Mogale City’s Emergency Services and other paramedics followed.

“The driver was unconscious and I saw blood running from his arm all the way down to the door of the driver’s side and down to the road. His wife jumped out of the bakkie hysterically and grabbed the young boy from the backseat.”

The driver was first stabilised inside the vehicle before he was freed from the wrecked vehicle by means of the Jaws of Life.

CPF 3 was also called to assist with the scene and closed off a section of Robert Broom Drive for an emergency helicopter landing.

The driver was then airlifted to the Netcare Milpark Hospital where he received treatment for his serious injuries.

The woman and the boy were transported by ambulance to hospital.

The driver of the truck and his female passenger were unharmed.
