One unlucky shopper truly experienced a blue Monday after having her handbag stolen from her.

To make matters worse, the person who robbed the woman fired a gunshot into the air as a warning shot.

Fortunately no one was injured by the gunshot. But something so innocent as walking towards the entrance of a mall will forever be tainted for this woman.

No one deserves to be a target and surely no one deserves to be in the centre of an armed robbery.

So why does it happen?

I wish I had the answer.

Will it make society more vigilant … I surely hope so! But I can’t help but wonder if it will.

On the one hand the perpetrator is praised for not being violent, yet, on the other hand, why go so far as using a gun and firing it only to take a handbag?

I think we have sensitised violence. We have become so accustomed to crime that we tend to shake it off as nothing.

Life goes on for the rest of us while this woman tries to pick up the pieces.

All we end up saying is, “aw well at least he did not shoot you”.

I’m just saying … it’s something we need to think about, Krugersdorp.
