Two detectives from Krugersdorp Police Station were arrested following a hostage situation at a Jet Mart store.

Two officers from the Krugersdorp Police Station along with two accomplices were arrested following an armed robbery and hostage situation in Krugersdorp’s CBD.

The armed men – two with guns and one with a knife – entered Jet Mart in Monument Street at approximately 2pm on Sunday 2 August.

The armed robbery quickly turned into a hostage situation with staff members being tied up while the suspects cut open the safe in the shop.

Mogale City’s Emergency Services along with the Flying Squad and other local police members were deployed and spent hours negotiating with the four robbers.

The News arrived at the scene and found a heavy police presence.

Curious members of the public stood in crowds at the Market and Burger Street intersection to get a glimpse of the fleet of police vehicles.

Two of the four robbers are constables from the Krugersdorp Police Detectives Unit, one of whom is the brother of the manager of that particular Jet Mart store.

Approximately four hours later police managed to arrest the four robbers. They subsequently were detained at the Randfontein Police Station.

Spokesperson for Gauteng Province’s police, Lieutenant Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said, in a media statement, that departmental steps will be taken against the police officers.

“Police management in Gauteng is of great concern and we will take strong action against police officers who are corrupt and involved in criminal activities. Those officers are a burden to the force and any information to expose them can be forwarded to the Provincial Duty General and Brigadier on 082 313 8299 or 082 444 4354 at all hours,” the statement reads.

The suspects have been charged with business robbery and will appear in court within the next day or two.
